Daniel “Sky” Szczepanski is a trumpet player based in Boston, born in Warsaw, Poland. Daniel is awarded by a very prestigious grant by Ministry of Culture in Poland due to his past achievements and in 2019 Daniel received prize from Downbeat Magazine for outstanding solo performance.
He initially started playing piano at the age of 6 and then trumpet at the early age started performing at festivals like “La Folle Journe” in France, “Jazz Rally” in Germany or “Crazy Days of Music” in Poland and famous concert halls inside country such as Polish Radio or National Philharmonic. In that time it was already very clear that Daniel is promising young musician because of his engagement and passion to the music. He always had “that rhythm” and “that something” what made him to be easily recognized from other musicians as well as his temper and character.
While he used to learn in field of classical music in Complex of State Music Schools name - of Karol Szymanowski, at the same time in the same school Daniel was playing Big-Band as a lead trumpeter and a soloist as well as in various brass ensembles and symphonic orchestra what makes him play repertoire from J.S.Bach to Count Basie, Duke Ellington or Neal Hefti. In 2012 he is graduating from High School and deciding to expand his musical journey, so in the same year he is starting Post Secondary Department of Jazz name of Henryk Majewski in Warsaw where he was spending the next 3 years for the sake of research of Jazz music. Except Big-Band influences, Roy Hargrove, Wynton Marsalis and Miles Davis were Daniel’s first non Western Classical music inspirations, music heroes and model of trumpet. In 2016 Daniel Szczepanski is realizing his big dream by acceptance letter to Berklee College of music where he received opportunity to meet and learn from one of the finest musicians. During that time he was discovering and sculpturing his tone on trumpet by working with excellent faculties such as Sean Jones and Tiger Okoshi. Daniel was also attending many of the concert of Jason Palmer at Wally’s Jazz Club, during his weekly residency there.
In 2019 Daniel was receiving Bacherol Degree from Berklee College of Music and in the same year enrolling into Master Program of Berklee Global Jazz Institute directed by Danilo Perez and Marco Pignataro afterwards where is studying with Jazz masters such Joe Lovano, George Garzone, Ralph Peterson, Dave Liebman, and many others.
Among last years Daniel was performing with musicians such as Paquito D’Rivera, Kenny Werner, Kevin Harris, Jason Parlmer, George Garzone, Zbigniew Namyslowski, Nicholas Payton, Ruben Rodriguez, Phil Wilson, Bill Dobbins and Gordon Goodwin. Also, he was the winner of many competitions inside the country back in the early school years. In 2018 he traveled as “Global Jazz Ambassador” to Dominica Republic to perform in “DR Jazz Festival” and give clinics to children, especially in uneducated poor areas which inspired and prepare him to take next steps in the field of music education.
Currently Daniel is working on his debut album as well as is involved in many other projects among other jazz musicians in United States in Poland. At this moment he is absorbed by studying at Global Jazz Institute while improving his abilities not only in performance and composing but also in the field of social change and music education and awareness.
